World's Wetlands Day

Did you know that one-third of all endangered or threatened species call wetlands home? February 2nd marks World Wetlands day, a time to celebrate these amazing biomes. Wetlands are incredibly important as they provide critical habitat, enhance water quality, and help sequester carbon naturally. Once overlooked and taken for granted, wetlands are highly productive and important to the ecosystem. Part water, full of plants, these aquatic wonderlands are a great place to see biodiversity in action.

Where is your favorite wetland on Lummi Island? Have you taken a stroll near the pond at the Curry Preserve lately? How about marched out near the rope swing at the Otto Preserve? You can even find the familiar scent of swamp cabbage wafting near the top of the Baker Trail from the wetlands on Lummi Mountain! Nearly all the LIHT preserve land has unique aquatic features which we will protect for future generations.
