Open Air Living: Finding Friluftsliv

Across the globe, under the Northern Lights, our Norwegian friends have a concept that could help us all stay healthy and sane this winter. The idea of Friluftsliv (Free-LOOts-Liv) roughly translates to “open-air life.” A common saying in Scandinavia is, “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.” More mindset than instructional, this way of life is deeply engrained in Norwegian culture. Friluftsliv is about spending time outdoors, perhaps wandering, and enjoying quality time with nature – no matter the weather.

As we head into the darkest times of winter, incorporating friluftsliv into your life could help fight off seasonal blues or a pandemic funk. Studies have shown that time spent in nature is good for mind, body, and soul - but it is often more difficult to muster up the will to head out in the pouring rain and wind. With a shift in mindset, we can see the opportunities winter holds, rather than focus on the barriers. We invite you to take a walk at the Curry, Otto, or Baker Preserve and practice a bit of open air living this holiday season. Even a quick jaunt to the mailbox could be done in the spirit of friluftsliv!
