Noticing the Small Things: Native Plants from the Ground View

  • Lummi Island Heritage Trust Resource Center 3560 Sunrise Road Lummi Island, WA, 98262 United States (map)

The second installation of our Native Plant & Pollinator Series features Jenny Harris, of Catkin Horticultural Arts as she shares “somewhat esoteric thoughts on the little things, soils, companions, litter, animals, trying to see what we often don’t see, and being less human.”

Jenny was born in an old garden in the eastern foothills of the Coast Range in North Central California where the oak woodland of her family’s land was more than playground.  Studying horticulture there in the 1980’s when native plant research, propagation and education and advocacy was really gaining speed and respect set her on the path she still walks. From working and learning to be a fine gardener for rising landscape architects and designers in the region to working in wholesale nurseries to landing on Lopez Island in the 90’s where she couldn’t help but stash many a plant into the ground along with a tiny speciality nursery, farm work, garden design and now mainly consultation and coaching for a better world with less plastic and more plants. All plants are kin but a special love for the less-known Pacific Northwest native perennials is her current main event.

This talk will be held in person at the LIHT Resource Center and will also be live-streamed via Zoom. Stay tuned for details on how to register to attend virtually!
